Changing your diet to allow for your digestive system to heal during an IBD flare can be a tricky (although necessary) undertaking to assist your body in healing your digestive tract. Beginning your day with a smoothie appropriately packed with protein, carbohydrates, and good fats, can be a convenient and easy way to support your body's healing process. Experiment with what ingredients you like, and journal how your body reacts to the ingredients. Those limiting fiber may want to remove the raw blueberries and flax seed.
The folate-packed spinach and prebiotic banana stimulate good gut bacteria growth and activity in this soothing, nutrient-dense smoothie.*

Inside Tract Smoothie* (Modified)
6 ounces purified chilled water or high-quality juice
1 banana, chopped, frozen
1 cup steamed spinach (around 2 cups raw)
¾ cup frozen organic blueberries (if raw fruit is tolerated)
1 scoop organic vegetable and fruit powder
1 scoop turmeric powder
2 teaspoons balanced 3-6-9 liquid oil
Spices and herbs, such as ginger, mint, and cinnamon to taste
Optional: 1-2 tablespoons ground flax seed (if you can tolerate fiber)
1. Bring ¾ cup of water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Place vegetable steamer in the pan and place the spinach in the steamer. Steam for 1-2 minutes, or until a vibrant green (avoid overcooking or spinach will be rubbery).
2. Rinse spinach with cold water.
3. Mix all the ingredients in a high-speed blender and process until smooth. Serve immediately.

There are so many blenders on the market with many different price points. The spinach in this smoothie needs to be mixed well, so test out your blender if you have the chance. The Vitamix is the cadillac of blenders, but we have used NutriBullet, Calphalon food processor, and the Ninja. All are great. Find one that works for you in your price point. We recommend a glass jar for the blender, as it is easier to clean.
