Digestive Wellness (DW): Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Alexa Rose Carlin (ARC): I'm an author, speaker, health coach and founder of the non-profit movement, Hello Perfect®. In January 2013, my entire life changed. My body went into septic shock, and I was induced into a medical coma. The doctors gave me a 1% chance of living. Through the power of my thoughts, I healed my body out of the coma. After this experience, though, I had a compromised immune system and digestive issues. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Through nutrition and the mind, I healed my body. I went virtually gluten-free and vegan and began juicing every day. I just recently published a cookbook, The Simple Gluten-Free Cookbook, with all of the recipes that helped heal my body.
DW: Congratulations! How exciting! We can't wait to check it out!
DW: What has helped you manage your disease the best?
DW: Are there other foods you stay away from besides gluten?
ARC: Dairy, meat, fish, and sugar. I also watch how much gluten I intake.
DW: Do you exercise? If so, what type(s)?
ARC: Yes! I love riding my bike, doing yoga, and running outside. Nature is very healing to me, so I like to workout outside as much as possible.
DW: Ok, now a few fun facts about you. What is your favorite food?
ARC: Bananas and avocados! It's a tie!
DW: What is your favorite TV show?
ARC: Shark Tank
DW: Guilty pleasure?
DW: What is your favorite way to relieve stress?
DW: What is your best advice you would give to someone newly diagnosed with UC or another digestive disease?
ARC: Be patient. The beginning is very difficult figuring out what upsets your stomach and what foods you can eat. Know that you will heal as long as you listen to your body. Tune into what your body is telling you and keep a food journal, so you can figure out what foods upset your stomach.
